Portimão is the largest city in the Western Algarve with its ca 70,000 inhabitants. The city is located along the edge of the Rio Arade that once upon a time was the entryway for the many boats going to Silves, the Algarve's old capital. The Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians were all early trading partners before the Moorish occupation in the 11th century and the port flourished. In 1924 the city became known as Portimão and had a large fishing industry up until the 1980s Today the biggest income comes from tourism. Portimão has many restaurants, cafés and bars and has kept its old charm with the local fish restaurants and narrow cobbled street in the famous Zona Ribeirinha. When it comes to shopping the city has a wide range of shops both on the main street Alameda and in the Aqua shopping centre. The town's most attractive sight is the promenade along the river that goes from the harbour to the old bridge.
