Portimão is the largest city in the Western Algarve with its ca 70,000 inhabitants. The city is located along the edge of the Rio Arade that once upon a time was the entryway for the many boats going to Silves, the Algarve's old capital. The Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians were all early trading partners before the Moorish occupation in the 11th century and the port flourished. In 1924 the city became known as Portimão and had a large fishing industry up until the 1980s Today the biggest income comes from tourism. Portimão has many restaurants, cafés and bars and has kept its old charm with the local fish restaurants and narrow cobbled street in the famous Zona Ribeirinha. When it comes to shopping the city has a wide range of shops both on the mainstreet Alameda and in the Aqua shopping centre. The town's most attractive sight is the promenade along the river that goes from the harbour to the old bridge.
Situated next to Portimao is the beautiful beach of Praia da Rocha, one of the most impressive beaches in the Algarve boasting many of the unique rock formations along the coast.
Just 10 minutes from the villa is Alvor. A former fishing village which, although now famed as a resort, has retained a distinctly Portuguese feel. Throughout Alvor you will find traditional Algarvean houses, cobbled streets and fishing boats lined along its harbour and beaches. Its 3 mile stretch of glorious sands offers a haven to those who seek water activities or the opportunity to explore this beautiful coastline. In addition this stretch of beach has an extensive wooden boardwalk which runs parallel to the beach and into the beautiful harbour, providing accessibility to all. Alvor also boasts many restaurants serving local, traditional fare, as well as a most comprehensive selection of bars and shops within its chiefly pedestrianised harbour and centre.
Owner perspective
We have had this villa since building it in 1987. In the early days the villa was used for holiday rentals as well as our own time there and all who stayed thoroughly loved it. In more recent times and with extension and refurbishing the villa has been used only for family, extended family and friends. My children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and now great nieces and nephews have all grown up there and some now have had their own time there and consider the villa and indeed Portugal a second home. The urbanisation is a peaceful retreat but the close villages and towns and the wider Algarve are amazing. It is with sadness that due to circumstances I will now say goodbye to the villa and I know that whoever purchases this home will love it too.
