Area Description
Portimão is located on the western part of the Algarve and is one of the larger cities on the coast with around 70,000 inhabitants. The town is sheltered along the edge of the Rio Arade which was once the entrance from the sea to Silves, the then capital of the Algarve. The Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians were all early trading partners before the Moorish occupation of the 12th century and the port flourished. It was only in 1924 that the city became known as Portimão and until the 1980s the city had a large fishing industry. Today, tourism is the major source of income and in areas by the beaches there are hotels and apartments to rent for all holidaymakers. Portimão has a large selection of restaurants, cafés, bars and the city retains its old charm down by the "Zona Riberinha" where old buildings and local fish restaurants line the small narrow cobbled streets. On the main street Alameda and in the shopping center Aqua shopping, you can find both clothes, shoes and furnishings.
Perhaps the most attractive part of the town is the promenade that runs along the riverbank from the marina to the bridge.
Of course, Portimão is best known for the fantastic Praia da Rocha beach which is one of the most impressive sandy beaches on the Algarve coast. In the eastern part of the beach are the remains of the 17th century fort, Forte da Santa Catarina, whose terraces offer a fantastic view of the beach and the river.
